Our team was tasked with carrying out essential roof repairs to a former Victorian farming cottage. Now a charming modern home set amongst the rolling Kent countryside, the property still retains many of its traditional architectural features—including its beautiful period roof.

Sympathetic Repair with Reclaimed Materials

The cottage's roof was originally constructed using traditional Kent Peg Tiles and hand-made clay tiles, many of which had begun to show signs of cracking due to age and their delicate nature. To preserve the authenticity and visual character of the cottage, our skilled team undertook a careful restoration. We meticulously replaced the damaged tiles with locally sourced reclaimed tiles, ensuring a seamless and sympathetic match to the original roofscape.

Enhancing Longevity with Copper Coil

To further enhance the roof’s longevity and protect the tilework for the future, we installed a crucial, subtle protective measure. We fixed 75mm wide copper coil along all ridge lines. The copper was mechanically fixed using self-tapping hex bolts and CT1 high-strength bonding adhesive, providing a secure and long-lasting installation.

Why Copper?

Copper is widely recognised for its natural anti-fungal and anti-moss properties. As rainwater washes over the copper and runs down the roof surface, it releases trace elements that:

• Kill moss and algae that sit on and between the tiles.
• Prevent new growth before it develops.
• Help protect tiles during winter freeze-thaw cycles, minimising the risk of further tile cracking or fracture.

This subtle but highly effective solution helps maintain the roof’s appearance and performance, ensuring this much-loved historic home remains protected for years to come.
